Teen Poetry Workshop with Luis J. Rodriguez

Cypress Park Library is proud to present a free, one-day poetry workshop with acclaimed poet & writer Luis J. Rodriguez.

This workshop is part of a series of workshops presented throughout the Los Angeles Public Library system in conjunction with Urban Word LA as part of the Los Angeles Youth Poet

Laureate contest.

All teen poets are encouraged to enter the Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate contest. The winner will be named  LA Youth Poet Laureate and win a book deal to publish their first book of poems. Luis J. Rodriguez is the Poet Laureate of Los Angeles selected in 2014 by Mayor Eric Garcetti. He is founding editor of Tia Chucha Press, now in its 25th year, and co-founder of Tia Chucha's Centro Cultural & Bookstore. He has fifteen books in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and children's literature, including the bestselling memoir, Always Running, La Vida Loca: Gang Days in L.A. and his short story collection The Republic of East L.A.

Classic Books

What kind of books are considered Classic? Who selected the titles? How long is the list? There are too many answers for these simple but complex questions. Nevertheless, A classic should be an outstanding example of a particular style, something of lasting worth or with a timeless quality. In music, in literature, and in art. In general, this is not an unacceptable definition of "Classic", isn't it?

So, Classic Books are those books with lasting worth and timeless quality. At Cypress Park Branch Library, we reserved a specific shelf area just for the "Classic Books"; the collection serves as part of the core library collections, for general reading, for school assignment, and for the sake of humanity. 

Classic books in fact are very popular among readers. For this reason, copies of popular titles need constant maintenance due to torn pages, missing pages, and even water-damage. In many cases, library simply replace old or damaged items with brand new publications.

Here are only some of the new copies of Classic Books our branch has just added to Classic collection. If you could not find the titles you wished to read on our shelves,  tell Reference librarian, and we will find you a copy from other branch libraries or purchase a new copy.

Keep It Clean Storytime with Councilmember Cedillo

Councilmember Gilbert Cedillo, the LA Bureau of Sanitation, and the Los Angeles Public Library invite you to Keep It Clean Children's Storytime.

The fun begins at 11:30am on Saturday, March 21, 2015. Special guests include Councilmember Gilbert Cedillo and Sanitation department mascots Octoclean and Connie the Couch!

Councilmember Cedillo will read the book Smash! Mash! Crash! There Goes the Trash by Barbara Odanaka. All children ages 5-10 in attendance will get a free copy of the book.

Book/Film Club

On Wednesday, March 11, Cypress Park Branch Library is hosting the Book/Film Club event at library's Community Room at 6:30 pm. The club will discuss the book and the movie, Namesake. Everyone is welcome.
